Throughout the school, staff use a variety of positive teaching methods, adapted to the age and needs of the children, believing that children learn best in a calm, well-structured learning situation. Classes may be taught as a whole or in small groups and a lot of individual teaching takes place too. Every minute counts and children are taught to concentrate hard and to persevere in overcoming difficulties, to respect other people’s right to be able to learn without distraction and to take responsibility for their own learning. The teachers present an enthusiastic, efficient and purposeful approach to which pupils readily respond, and foster a sense of pride in personal achievement. Effort, progress and success are all rewarded and children are encouraged to support each other.

Sound, traditional teaching methods are employed and great emphasis is placed on the basic skills of reading, spelling, handwriting and arithmetic. Each pupil is given the opportunity to enjoy success, and accuracy and spontaneous recall are fostered. During the school day, staff teach different classes, so that the children not only get used to having different teachers but also benefit from being taught by subject specialists. In this way, staff get to know all of the children too.

Daily homework tasks are set - revision, learning for a test, reading, practicing a newly acquired skill or copying out a first draft for example, to develop the habit of independent study which will be an essential skill during the senior school years and on into university.

Progress is regularly monitored throughout the academic year with day-to-day assessments to diagnose learning needs. From Y1 exams are set twice a year. Parents can talk to staff on a daily basis if required but reports are sent out and formal meetings are organized twice yearly. Education is a partnership between school and home and parents are encouraged to come into school to find out what their children are doing and how they can be supported in the learning process. Happy children learn – this is the key to success!
